I know he's well respected among other musicians (and he SHOULD be). I just think he's underrated by the fan base.

He's not bad, but I wouldn't call him one of the greats. But there are very few rock guitarists who I would consider great.

P.S. to gm: I did not say he was a distasteful or egomaniacal player, I simply don't rank him among the most innovative or technically skilled guitarists. In my opinion, he is not quite on equal footing with such guitarists as Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Grant Green, Al Di Meola, Kenny Turrell, Jimmy Page or David Gilmour. Moreso than his lead style, I am unimpressed by his compositional style, though there are many Queen songs I am well fond of.

I disagree with the first guy, Brian May is one of the greatest innovators and exquisitely tasteful in his playing - he iis not a maniac who kills a song with his ego-driven soloing. Basically, he plays music, not only guitar. But he is not underrated, he is very highly respected among guitarists.
