VPI, Banfield, and Tesco are among the more popular animal insurance companies around. There are many many more, and as others mentioned above, you may want to talk to your local vet about what he prefers.
The majority of pet insurance companies, put their focus on cats and dogs, leaving other animals, that they refer to as "exotics" to the rest of the insurance companies.
So depending on what your loving pet is, you may have a slightly tough time coming across a company that you feel meets your needs.
If and when you speak to a vet about different companies, remember, there ARE more out there. You can google or ask jeeves about pet insurance and dozens upon dozens of companies will turn up in your search results. You should really research what YOU think your pet will need, and try not to let anyone else tell you what insurance would best suit you.... remember, the companies are still in this to make money.

There are insurance policies but it has been my experience that there is a loophole for just about everything! The best policy I have had was the new puppy policy which covered anything other than normal shots for the puppy -worth the money if you are unsure of the breeder or the conditions the puppy came from. It covered parvo etc.
However, I've also had different policies for adult animals and after a few bad experiences with companies refusing to pay (again, the loopholes) I gave up and discontinued insurance except for liability and on my show dog.

There is pet insurance cause Prize Winning dogs that carry a good Pedigree could be worth thousands of dollars and need to be insured just like race horses.
