Whenever i'm installing my printer, i have my cd-rom in, and it's installing, then it ask for me to connect the USB cord, and turn on the printer. I do just that, and it won't ever pick it up. It will pick up the printer as a drive though, it goes under the removable storage drives under "my computer" and then sometimes it will says that an error occurred with the printer. But when i connect the printer to my laptop, it works just fine. I have a brother MFC 420-CN printer. if anyone can help me out, it would be great.

Man, I hate those Brother printers. I don't know why they make them so complicated to install. I'd uninstall it, and Install it again. To tell you the truth alot of people have the SAME problem with those printers. I ended up exchanging mine for an HP officejet all-in-one. Anyways, If that doesn't work, CHANGE the USB location, meaning it might not work in the back of the comp, but it may work in the front usb hub.

Make sure no other device drivers, such as Zip Drives, External CD-ROM Drives, etc., are set to run automatically through the USB port when booting up your computer.

Suggested areas to check:

Win.ini file
To see this file, please refer to C\WINDOWS\Win.ini.
If you can find any devices which communicate with the USB port listed with load= or run=, you need to delete them.

Startup Group
Please click Start-->Programs-->Startup.
If you can find any devices which communicate with the USB port, you need to delete them from there.
