The holes have probably always been there- hamsters play fight when they are small which can result in injuries like that, and hamsters' ears go bald sometimes when they get older which is why you might only recently have noticed. If they're not causing him any problems and are not infected (eg weeping/smelling/swollen) there's no real point in taking him to the vet. Obviously you would if they were concerning you at all.
Bar chewing is normal, they need to wear their teeth down because they constantly grow. I find whatever toys/woode blocks etc you put in the cage they still prefer the bars.

I'm guessing you have a Habitrail? These cages are positively horrible, as they don't supply enough space. I'd get a decent sized wire cage. Also, he is most probably bored so take him out at 7-10pm every night. Take him out in the hamster ball and keep him running in there for a max. of 15 minutes. Give him a bit of veg, such as cucumber. Keep him busy! Get him a hamster wheel if he doesn't already. Hamster wheels are excellent. Also, check his teeth. They might be a bit long, so consider taking him to the vets to get them cut, if they're long. Good luck! x

I have a syrian hamster and he has one small hole on one of his ears. I asked my local vets about it and he said that if there is nothing that he could have caught his ears on he should be fine. He also said that the hamster may have been fighting with one of his brothers ofr sisters in the pet shop and a scrappy fight could have caused it, however yours is an old hamster so you should ring the vets just to make sure he is ok. Also the gnawing problem, just put some wooden blocks that you can buy from the pet shop and he should be fine (all hamsters do it)!! xxx

All hamsters chew their bars, it's a natural inclination. Get him some chew sticks or some hard wooden houses from a pet store. He'll chew on them and eliminate some of the need to chew the bars.
The holes on his ears could be from a fight or injury. If they're scaly, dry looking or flaky take him to the vet. If they don't seem to be causing him any discomfort I wouldn't worry about it.

Dont know about the ears mate, get it to the vet if your concerned. All hamsters chew on the bars of there cage, it's naturall and theres nothing you can do about it i'm afraid.
You can pile his cage with toys and chews and all sorts but it'll still chew the bars.
Thats why i wont get anouther one, ever. It's very annoying to say the least.

They have to chew or naw on hard objects to keep their teeth from growing out too far. Their teeth never stop growing and they have to keep them to a certain length or they won't be able to eat.
Pet stores or even Wal-Mart sells special woods for them to chew on.
It's the same reason owners of Parrots provide a string of different things(usually wood) to chew or naw on.
A Beavers teeth are the same way, so is a mouse or rat.

the ear problem needs to see the vet, but about the cage- the solution is either to get an aquarium, that would be easier to see him, and .......no bars!! other wise he may be bored, put some more toys, and things to do in there and see if that works. hamsters need to chew to wear their teeth down, so the tank may be the best choice.
good luck!!

Ours have that from having them together at first. The holes in the ears.
And as for the chewing, it's natural. Get some wood for him to chew on to keep his teeth worn down.
