God said it would happen (1Pet. Chap. 3 and elsewhere). The signs are right for it to occur at any time. And no, it wouldn't bother me. I'm ready and looking forward to it. "Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus." Rev. 22: 20

The end of the world as we know it is now, no wait it's now ...
The world is constantly ending and starting because if we consider the world to be all that is knowable then everything is always changing. The past is always ending and the future is always beginning. (OK there was my metaphorical cop out.)
The end of the Earth as our home.
The end of the current epoch of human history will be soon, like maybe ten maybe a thousand years soon. There are two basic options. We can either destroy the planets ability to support human life, so we all die. Or else we overcome each of the potential threats to such and end. Possible threats range from environmental disaster, Global Thermal Nuclear War, expending all our resources before we develop replacements or something unforeseen.
The only way to outlive earths ability to support human life is to not be tied to earth, or not be human. Colonizing space. Be it through satellites, FTL travel or Terra forming Mars. Or, evolving into something which can survive on whatever is left of the earth when we are done with it. Is evolution always an improvement?
The end of our current lifestyle.
Possibly in con junction with the above mentioned catastrophes, maybe not, will come the end of the super state system of government. What will come next I dare not say. It could be a regression to feudalism and warlords, or a development of fascism, or some one world state.
I do believe the time of the "benevolent government" trying to create the greatest good for the greatest number is drawing to and end. The grand experiments of Democracy and Communism are both beginning to crumble under the weight of corruption.
I must admit I am curious to see what comes next.

What is the "world" to you?
The Human society, the religious world, the planet Earth, the Solar System, The Milky Way, the Universe or maybe your life.
Remember that the end is only the beginning.

We should not turn to religion to answer this as almost anything can be used as a sign in some religion that the world is about to end.
If our out of control imperialism doesn't blow us all up then the sun shall run out of hydrogen, expand and consume the solar system in about 10 million years.
According to the book "Good Omens" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaimen (magnificant authors, the both of them) it is next Saturday, just after tea.

The world will end when Jesus comes back and none but God will know the time.
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

Scientist reckon in about 4 billion years the sun will engulf the earth, as the earth is about 4 billion years old now, we are halfway there, so the earth is middle aged.
