Oprah does not believe that African-Americans don't value education, and the majority of African-Americand do not rebel against the school system. And what the hell is "the minority school system?" If it's dysfunctional, it's because of the policymakers and taxpayers neglect in minority and underpriviledged areas. Who would value an education that ain't worth ****?
To Rip: The majority of people on welfare in this country are white.

I've learned not to lump people together into groups. Especially groups separated and categorized by race. I know where you're coming from though. I think looking at Africa's track record so far, we can see them lacking in EVERYTHING. African Americans have opportunities here, where in Africa there are much less. I don't think its a value issue, because you would have to assume that they all did that by that statement... which is not true in the least. I think its more of an issue of taxpayers value upon their schools and neighborhoods.
BTW I'm a guy, so I'm vehemently annoyed with the Oprah Winfrey show. That said, I respect her as a humanitarian, and I think the work she does is amazing... I just think her television personality is... odd. Love the woman- hate the show.

First just let me say that I think that Oprah has the money to do just about anything that she wants to do in any country,or any continent. As a substitute teacher, I think that the educational system in America has fail the students. The students have lost the desire to learn (some) and for the most part, the school system need to put the prayers back in the school. Most of the students in schools in America do not say the pledge of Allegiance. The students do not respect themselves or the teacher and administration.

1st, research before you make a statement. Per her inteviews, she confronted criticisms about her African philanthropy with this statement "America's children as a whole are too materialistic. That's why I did not open a school in America. There are those who have greater needs."
2ndly, I respect her wishes to donate, contribute, volunteer, teach, or whatever with HER money. That's her business. I am proud to say the least that she chose to do something positive with her wealth. Everyone is not that responsible. If anything, as an African American student, I have been and continue to be inspired by her efforts. I use that same spirit to give back to my community.
From my own personal experience, it is not that we do not value education. We have no inspiration in the school. Outdated books and no support is why black children are not excited about the prospect of school. And under those conditions, who would be? And blacks have indeed progressed, those progressions do not get the same attention and praise as BETs Uncut.

NO, IT IS NOT A WAKE-UP-CALL FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS . WHAT OPRAH HAVE DONE IS WHAT AFRICAN AMERICANS WANT DONE FOR THE CHILDREN OF AFRICA. SHE HAVE MADE BLACK AMERICA PROUD IN EVERY WAY. THE BLACKS HERE IN AMERICA HAVE A CHANCE TO GET AN EDUCATION OF THEIR CHOICE. ARE BLACKS HERE IN AMERICA IN MORE NEED THEN THE CHILDREN IN AFRICA? NO THEY ARE NOT IN SOME CASES THEY DON;T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WHAT THEY HAVE ALREADY. ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS WALK THROUGH THE DOORS THEY ARE OPEN ALL THE TIME FOR AMERICA BLACK CHILDREN. AND THEY DON'T HALF THE TIME HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT WHERE THEIR MEALS ARE COMING FROM, LIKE THE CHILDREN OF AFRICA. BLACKS ARE SO HAPPY WE HAVE A BLACK PERSON LIKE OPRAH TO TAKE CARE OF THESE BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN. IF I HAD THE MONEY I WOULD DO THE SAME AND ALSO BUY THE CHILDREN OF SUDAN FREEDOM. I KNOW BLACK AMERICA AND WHITE AMERICA IS PROUD TO HAVE OPRAH AS AN AMERICAN. "THANK YOU SO MUCH OPRAH WE LOVE YOU FOR YOU" .

Heck yes! They are against anything they have to earn. Granted not all are like that, but the majority are.
