The Romans were originally pagans. As they conquered various countries and tribes they absorbed and adapted other religions into their own. The most obvious example of this is the Greek & Roman gods - Zeus = Jupiter, Poisedon = Neptune, Ares = Mars Aphrodite = Venus, Ceres = Demeter etc.

During the reign of Emperor Constantine Ancient Rome adopted the Chistian faith and this became the official religion.

The Romans were very superstitious. They believed that good or bad luck was given by the gods – if the gods were happy then you would have good luck but if they were unhappy then your luck would be bad.

There were many different gods and each of them looked after different things.

1. Jupiter was the god of the sky and the most important god

2. Neptune was the god of the sea

3. Mars was the god of war

4.Venus was the goddess of love

5. Bacchus was the god of wine

6. Ceres was the goddess of agriculture

I do not think there was a specific name. They had several gods therefore they were polytheistic as were several other cultures even to this day.
