Go to www.webmd.com and search for youth weightlifting.
I think you will be okay, so long as you don't lift too heavy. Also pushups, pullups, and crunches/situps are good alternatives to lifting weights.

weight lifting at your age is okay i started at a young age and it didnt stump my growth im 5 11 all i would advise is that you do an all over work regime and not try and concentrate too much on one area such as arms or chest.
try to tone up everywhere first then with a good and balanced meal intake steadily increase the weight just so it burns a little after exercise. i was advised by an ex mister universe that this was the best way forward if you hitting it hard and only doing arms and chest it will hurt in later life because youll of over indulged the muscle too early on.
just remember your 14 not 40 so do it slowly then no harm can come to you.

Yes so be sensible unless your trying to body build for the sake of just being able to lift heavy weights ( A pointless exercise IMO) you dont need to use heavy weights, avoid lifts like dead lift and military press and when doing bicep curls don't stand up but rather sit on the edge of a sofa or chair and rest your elbow on your thigh with your legs apart because this will take the weight off your back

It can effect the way you develop. Be smart about it. It can stunt your growth if you go too hard. Lifting weights can encourage testosterone output, which might have benefits, but the increase in testosterone might tell your body that you have enough, and your testes can shut off. You don't want that - so don't go too hard. That's what taking steriods does. Your body stops making testosterone because you are getting it from the drug and it knows it doesn't need more. Don't mess with that.
I've seen guys at the gym who have deveoped breasts because they took steroids - not even illegal, so-called testosterone booster. It shut off their own supply. Looks pretty stupid - even if you're big and muscular you won't take off your shirt if you have big saggy nipples. It's a joke - don't be that guy who keeps his shirt on.
Just take it nice and slow and listen to your body. No pain no gain is a lie - it goes like this - No pain, no pain. Just gently do what your body can take and you will fill out to be healthy and muscular.

My son (now aged 17) started lifting weights at 13 and he has a lovely toned body. He eats healthy and is in great shape.
read up some books and maybe get some advise from a gym.

It will be fine mate, as long as your not lifting mega heavy, which you most probably wont be anyway.
Oh and dont listen to Mike J, what he said is pure B******t. Working out does result in higher test output, which comes from your own body, so how on earth can that shut down your own supply?!?!
Im 16 now, train 5x a week, and started when I was 15. I now look back and wish Id started at your age!

Yes you can start but start with low weights with high reps. If you start doing heavy weights it can effect your growth spurt due to the compression of your bone structure etc.
Remember to rest your muscles for 48 hrs, so work out only 3 days a week (monday, wednesday and friday).

You may grow up to have more commitment to things, be more aware of your own abilities and of course may be stronger than the average 14yr old.
It can be fine to do if you follow a correct plan from someone qualified like your sports teacher, a personal trainer, most people who have studied sports science at university or maybe a doctor ( although most doctors don't quite understand weightlifting properly ).

It sure can! You could really screw up your legs and back with over working them. I think lifting is great, but do it mildly. Don't build a lot of weight that your frame isn't ready for. And make sure you are getting plenty of CV exercise too.

if you eat well and make sure you dont injure your back, it can only affect you in a positive way.
it is possible that if you stop lifting weights after youre 22 orso, you might have trouble staying the same weight and bloat.
