Pour a bottle of Professional Strength Liquid Plumber down the non-disposal side of the sink, be patient, protect yourself.

It sounds like the drains were not properly installed and that takes a plumber or a knowledgable handyman to fix. In the meantime, always run water for a few seconds after turning off the disposal, also try putting a grease cutter like Dawn down sink and disposal and then pour boiling water down to help keep drains open. This is not uncommon for many diswashers and you can ignore re- plumbing if the sink is not overflowing.

If plunging will not work, then you need to run a "snake" down the drail line. You can buy a hand held one at any big box hardware store for about 15.00

Your air trap vent might be plugged or, you don't have one. This is that shiny little thing on top of your sink that you always wonder what it's for, now you know. Sometimes they get backed up and get something in them and then the water backs up into the sink.
