I realise that if this was a maths exam it wouldn't help, however I have completely forgot what I am doing.. I can't copy anyone elses either because we have it first thing. If someone could tell me how to do it and not the actual answers I'd appreciate it too ;)

2.4576 x 10^4 (that's a 10 written normally with a superscript [raised] 4 when you write it by hand)

So, I have moved the decimal point until I have just one number in front of it (the 2). I've shifted the point 4 places to the left, so the exponent of the 10 becomes 4.

the next one is similar, 6.2456 x 10^4

do the third one yourself from these examples, hint: decimal point moves three places.

The next two have the decimal point moved the other way so

0.0134 becomes 1.34 x 10^-2

the -2 shows the decimal point moves two places to the right.
you can do the next one exactly the same

231.7 = 2.317 x 10^2
similar for next

68700000 : how many places? Yep, 7 (count 'em) and no need for trailing zeros so 6.87 x 10^7

Don't forget - me doing them is easy, now practice so you understand what to do.......if you've got any interest in engineering this will apply to "real life" when you leave school, otherwise it probably won't.

2.4576 X 10 ^ 4 (10 to the power of 4)
6.2456 X 10 ^ 4
1.7943 X 10 ^ 3
1.34 X 10 ^ -2 (10 to the power of negative 2)
1.408 X 10 ^ -2
2.317 X 10 ^ 2
9.5641 X 10 ^ 2
6.87 X 10 ^ 7

The first part is ALWAYS from 1 (included) to 10 (not included).
X ----- multiplied by
10 to the given power

They are already in standard form aren't they? Maybe you need them in scientific notation. If that is true, then the answers are..
1.)2.4576 x 10 to the power of 4
2.)6.2456 x 10 to the power of 4
3.)1.7943 x 10 to the power of 3
4.)1.34 x 10 to the power of -2
5.)1.408 x 10 to the power of -2
6.)2.317 x 10 to the power of 2
7.)9.5641 x 10 to the power of 2
8.)6.87 x 10 to the power of 7

I hope this helps. We just got through with this stuff in algebra!!

I’m guessing that it should go something like this, see if you can remember numbers like this
2.4576 x 104 (ten to the power 4)
6.2456 x 104 (ten to the power 4)
1.7943 x 103 (ten to the power 3)
1.34 x 10-2 (ten to the power -2)
1.408 x 10-2 (ten to the power -2)
2.317 x 102 (ten to the power 2)
9.5641 x 102 (ten to the power 2)
6.87 x 107 (ten to the power 7)

the superscript is not working in this. i hope you know what to do

Standard form rules:

1. Write the number so it is between one and ten:

so 24576 becomes 2.4576

2. work out how many times you have to multiply it by ten to get teh origional answer:

ie. 2.4576 * 10 to the 4

3. if it is a very small number it will be to the -x (where x is the number of tens you have to multiply it by).

They won't take long

Back in my day if we forgot to do our homework we sat it out in detention, or at least copied someone elses in form registration. You won't be able to take Yahoo answers into your maths exams..
