I'm 18 and I want to go to college to become a plastic surgeon, my mom doesn't make much money a year and thats who I live with. The average cost for a year normally would be around $6,000 but with my moms income I get a year for $2,000 a year. I was wondering with this income how much would it cost to get me through college and medical school? thanks.

You cannot become a plastic surgeon unless you are a VERY good student. First you must graduate from college with very good marks, then you must go to four years of Medical School and at least 5 years of residency. So you will not be a plastic surgeon until you are at least 31 years old.

Is this impossible? No! You can do it, but you need to do a lot of planning.

First, you must apply to a lot of top 100 schools. Many of those schools have full scholarships for outstanding students. Some of them are "need blind" - that means that if you are admitted, they will arrange for you to have all the money you need to graduate. If you are super-ggod, you can get into Harvard. Harvard is free if your family makes less than $60,000 a year.

When you get to Med School, there are very few scholarships available, but you will be able to borrow the money to attend school. You might get out owing $200,000 but that's OK if you are making $400,000 a year!

So, check your marks, your SAT score and your extracurriculars and go after some scholarships! If you are a good enough student to be a surgeon, then you are good enough to get your education paid for.

I suggest that for two years, you go to a community college, and then transfer after two years to a state school. Both of those should be fairly inexpensive, and provided that you get good grades, should still be able to get you into a decent medical school. But med school is really expensive, so you'd better be working through your undergrad years to try and save some up.

Also, if your mom earns that little, you're definitely eligible for grants from the government. Check up on things like FAFSA and Pell Grants. And many schools give out need-based aid, or have work-study programs

It would cost you a LOT more than $6,000 a year, trust me. Think student loans or save up your money.

There is also the military, which will pay for college but ship you off to Iraq. Or scholarships.

Good luck!

It is going to cost you a lot of money dude, but if you take out student loans, and finish it will be worth it in the long run.
