Downloading,moving, and deleting a lot of files on your computer can cause the hard drive to fragment, which will slow your performance. But in order for it to slow down your computer, it would have to be so full that it does not even have enough room for its "swap" file, which is not that large. The best thing you can do with regards to hard drive and speed is to keep it defragmented.

Fact: Having a lot of stuff running unnecessarily makes your computer slow.
Files that are not in use have nothing to do with the speed of your computer. However files that are in use are using system resources...some of them are unnecessary. The more processes are running...the slower a new process will be executed...
