... which went as follows: someone was "it" who picked a subject ie cars, the rest then to decide a make each, tell "it" the chosen makes, then "it" threw a tennis ball up in the air and shouted a make. Everyone had to run away but whoever chose that one called had to catch the ball and shout stop. Then had tot ake 3 steps and threw the ball at the nearest person. If you hit the person they were "it". Please help - what was it called?

Being a Geordie, a very similar game was played, and it was known as "baal ont ar*se". Or "baallontass" - in Geordie.
Daft but true.
I suppose it varies from county to county.
The nearest had to turn away from "it" to be struck by an old deflated tennis ball on the bottom. Then he was "it".
What was it called in your neck of the woods ?
I see your point, and will look at other answers, as I am amused in recollection of the game.

Watch out ! he's got the ball !

In my neighborhood, we called it "Butts Up", because that's where the ball usually hit you. My cousins who lived across town called it that, too.
