My parents say that I can only have a myspace account if I can give good reasons for having it other than the "social aspect". They say I can get more than enough interaction through AIM, email, and just calling them. They also think it's just another complete waste of time, as are video games and television.

I'm on the verge of just doing it without their consent, but I would much rather have them be OK with it.

If you're in high school there's a lot of good reasons why you can use Myspace other than the negative aspects of it.

Myspace lets users post various information about what happened at school and lets users keep blogs where they can exchange information freely in the case of a big event happening. Therefore, these pages can also serve as a kind of "checkpoint" in times of personal emergency as I myself have recently found out.

Myspace also lets you explore who you really are by surveys from other people. Some people come up with some really interesting questions that let you explore who you are and what you'd do in certain situations that you've never thought of before.

Lastly, Myspace has an extensive collection of undiscovered music and many bands have pages on the site allowing you to check in and see what they're doing such as if they have any local shows coming up in your area, any news that they may have posted on there and just discovering new music to listen to. In case you're not one for underground Rock they also have a lot of pages from other artists in different genres as well.

I use myspace to talk to my friends who don't live near me and whose aim/phone number I didn't know (but I was able to find their myspace). Yes, I could use aim to talk to people whose screen names I do know, but I find myspace to be more convenient and more fun. Plus a lot of my friends aren't on aim/email anymore, except the ones who don't have a myspace.

I actually got one without my parents consent, but they found out eventually and were ok with it as long as I didn't talk to people I don't know (which I don't). But it would be better to get their consent.
