Well, as you haven't stated a budget or a preferred size, I'm simply going to recommend the best...the BenQ FP241W 24 inch Widescreen. Its wonderful. Read the review:
http://www.trustedreviews.com/displays/review/2006/09/13/BenQ-FP241W-24in-Widescreen-Monitor/p1
I'm a designer and this is by far the best 24 inch screen on the market at the moment for colour, clarity and reliability. Its also got a HDMI input, which puts it way ahead of the game (if you want it to be "future proof" you should really make sure of that).

so many monitors are doing a great job out there in this year of 2007. Many of them are names that you never heard of, but yes they all are improving and competing against big brand boyz out there.
Viesonic - The best of LCD, known for many years of quality of their displays, and still on LCD market they're setting the bar that nobody cud easily reach.
LG - simply one word, wow, ultra sharp and awesome contrast, you could never own and LG and complain about it, its much better than samsung displays out there, thus its a little more expensive.
Samsung - most selling display pannels on the market, for their good quality and very good pricing and availabilty.
Sony - yet another quality product, but make sure to have some extra bucks, becoz sony prices neva been easy and affordable to many.
these are the best if you want to get, and these brands wud never let u down, i personally use a new name brand "Chimei Corp" a 19" widescreen, Chimei is a Taiwan manufacturer, which the Best LCD manfucturer VIEWSONIC use it as their pannels sometimes.
acer, BenQ, Hanns-G, Hyundai, and Sceptre are some other popular brands names to look for if ur shopping online. All these pannel manufacturers do have a widescreen option too, so in case you want one, you'll neva be disappointed.
personal recomendation - Viewsonic or LG, look for your own specs under these manfucaturers.
hope my answer helped. good luck bro.

it depends on what your using it for really. If its just plain borring stuff then the cheapest would be best, if you want colour depth for picture editing and movies then sony or LG are prefered. For gaming its veiwsonic.
Hope that helps.
