The sock monster comes and gets them. He takes them away to make his nest, so there is somewhere for his mate to have lots of little sock monsters. It's an endless cycle.

Here is an answer to your second question -- why do so many get lost. Consider that when you lose one sock from a pair, that pair becomes useless. So what do you do with the sock you still have? You probably either store it somewhere in the hope of discovering its partner, or you get rid of it. What you should do is put it in right back in the laundry hamper! If you don't, then you are guaranteeing that the next time a sock goes missing, it will ruin another pair. If you put lone socks in the hamper as well, then there's a fair chance that the lone sock will get lost, and then when you're folding your socks, you won't even notice! In other words, if disappearing socks is a random process, then we are all unconsciously gaming it towards the undesired outcome of ruining more pairs of socks by removing the stranded socks from future laundry batches. That's why we perceive that "so many socks get lost."

As for the first question, my theory is that socks get stuck inside sheets and towels by static electricity, and all those lost socks are still inside the house, hiding.

Check under the bed or the sofa. Maybe they havent made it into the dryer to begin with. I know what you mean because, I have a landry basket full of unmached socks.

cuz the static electricity gets them stuck to the other clothes like inside the sleeves of shirts
so they get separated
and you cant find them.

try clipping them together with safety pins before you wash them
