Olivia, a countess, who has inherited her family's house and wealth as a result of her father's and brother's deaths, is in mourning as the play begins and is uninterested in those who seek her hand in marriage. However, it is evident as the play proceeds that she is recovering from her grief, which seems to be less than genuine, and able to form romantic attachments. Although not wise in her initial choices, she finally does find a suitable match with Sebastian. She exhibits kindness at times by her treatment of certain people in her household, and moodiness which seems only to pretend sadness at the deaths in her family.

i think of she is unswerving in her devotion to Orsinio and to her "lifeless" brother's reminiscence. i think of she is clever in bobbing up with a manner of turning her shipwreck tragedy right into a plan so as that she will stay to tell the story. and he or she is clever in her dialogues with Olivia.
