Actually you can tell if water is soft by feeling it when it is hot. If it is soft, it will feel oily on your skin. As well, any kind of soap rlathers better in soft water. If you have a coffee pot that needs to be cleaned alot, or you see rust stains or scale around the drains, then the water is hard. There are test strips that you can get from your local plumbing supply store that will allow you to check your water hardness levels, which is handy to make sure the water softener is operating correctly. Hope this helps

Carp or Goldfish don't really need soft water and are fairly tolerant to chlorine as long as the water is added gradually. You have two easy options for soft water,1, do you know anyone with a domestic water softener who you can cadge some water from, or, 2, collect rain water in a plastic container, allow it to settle and use this ( also no chlorine problem). You don't actually say what the hardness level in the tank is - anything below about 200 ppm is quite safe, in the south of England (notoriously hard water) the range is between 300 - 350 ppm depending on recent rainfall. Are you using any filtration? if not you need to change about 10% of the water every so often to prevent the buildup of nitrates/nitrites.

In my state you can take a sample to their facility and have the water tested for free, check your states website, there are other things to consider besides hardness, accuracy is important, the water companies are not always forthcoming about problems.

Home Depot and Lowes both sell testing kits as do most pool supply houses. The easiest way to get that information is to call your water company. They have to provide a report that includes that information on a yearly basis. They will send it to you for free.

A simple pH test will tell you, 7.0 is neutral, anything higher is softer, you can also just call the water dept. and they will tell you. The water dept. is NOT self governing, and must submit to random unannounced visits from the dept. of health, as well as well samples being taken by the state, and sent out to independent agency's for testing as well as at state and water dept. labs. DO NOT listen to "Scare Tactics" that PLUMBERS use to sell you unneccassary purification, and other equipment, if they suggest it, tell them that you just want to check with the water dept. on that, and watch the plumbers face, and "tune" change.

All the answers below are somewhat right. You can tell simply by using the water during your shower. If it suds good, does it feel slippery? all of these.
