ok, i have 2 gerbils, Tater Tot and Peanut. Does anybody who has or has had gerbils hold their gerbils, like ALOT?? what i mean is things such as walking around the house, or when you are on the computer do you hold you gerbils, and are they calm about it?? i would really like to have that kind of bond with my gerbils. i want our bond to be like whenever i stick my hand down into the tank, they automatically climb on and want to come out. here's our current stage: i stick my hand in the cage, they sniff me, and get half way on, but they don't seem as curious. i do let them out when i can by doing the following:
i have a playpen for them that hooks up to tubes
sometimes they get a run in the bathtub
i try to hold them as often as they will let me
i've also tried when i want to hold them, i lure them with a cheerio or something but they just grab it and go to a corner and eat it. is there an easier way to get them liking with me.
also how long did it take to bond with your gerbils

Most gerbils will never be comfortable just sitting still in your hands; they would rather explore! Males are more laid-back than females, though, especially as they get older and slow down some. I'd wager yours are still at the age where their energy level is either on "high" or "off", with little in between.

It really depends on the individual. I have some gerbils that are perfectly content to sit on my shoulder or neck, while I'm at the computer. Others I have to watch constantly in that kind of situation, as they'd much rather climb down to investigate the chair and the rest of the room.

The bathtub is an excellent way to interact with them, as well as let them get rid of some excess energy! The easiest way to pick up a gerbil is to gently scoop him up, using both hands. You can sort of herd him towards a wall with one hand, and use the other to block his escape. If you use the wall maneuver, he'll probably try to climb up on the hand himself.

As for bonding time... I'm a bit out of practice, since the majority of my gerbils are bred here or come directly from breeders, so they are already tame and bond very quickly.

The negatives are they do no longer act like cats or canines so which you would be able to desire to settle for them on their words. Rabbit urine can get pungent particularly immediately so the cage needs to saved sparkling to maintain scent down. Rabbits can scratch and chew and could, in the event that they do no longer seem to be dealt with staggering. additionally, do no longer plan to maintain extra beneficial than one to a cage (except neutered) - same sexes will combat and opposite will breed at a youthful age. they have very soft digestive systems so as that they might desire to have superb feeding. in the event that they get unwell, this is totally perplexing to handle so prevention is the foremost. The positives are they're very unique - a happy rabbit zips around, leaps right away into the air, differences direction and zooms off. This habit is stated as binkying. they're ok in case you opt for for to puppy them and that they are ok unique themselves. as quickly as you have your common equipment, they're low-fee to feed and shop. they do no longer bark, meow or might desire to be taken out at 6 am to pee. they do no longer barf hairballs on the rug. lots of them will use a muddle pan, which makes it lots much less annoying to bathe their cage. lots of places that don't enable cats and canines might enable a rabbit. And in case you get attracted to showing rabbits, it relatively is a huge type of relaxing and lots extra lower priced than showing canines, etc.
