I agree w/Chi Guy about the commute, but it's just as difficult traveling to the suburbs. I live in the city & work in one of the small suburbs near O'Hare.

Rent can be expensive in the city depending where you decide to live. Lincoln Park is beautiful but extremely over priced. If you have a car, prepare for street parking if your building doesn't have a designated area. Street parking can be tricky depending on the neighborhood.

As for culture, you name - we have it. Chicago has incredible museums (art, history, science, planetarium)plus lots to do downtown & the suburbs. Spring & summer are great for exploring downtown & the lakefront. Lots of festivals during the spring, summer & fall in each neighborhood.

One of the best sites to look up for what you can see & do is www.metromix.com it's owned & operated by the Chicago Tribune (one of the city's newpapers). Check out the Trib's site for apts at www.chicagotribune.com. Also try the Chicago Reader www.chireader.com. The Reader is the local free paper & has a lot of great info. Hope this helps.

Good question...
Commute is horrific through downtown. Jobs are plentiful in various fields. Economy is always well for career minded people. The city is liberal. Some of the the burbs are conservative and racist toward minorities. If you are not a minority then your options are broader.. You can date any ethnic type your heart desires with any level of education you seek. Chicago has every culture on earth and has something for everyone as far as food, museums, entertainment and such. You must dress to impress in Chicago. Many places have dress codes (no jeans or tennis shoes) and such.

The beaches are fun and relaxing. Navy Pier is a fun outing (boat rides and such). Grant Park home of the famous Married With Children opening fountain scene is nice to walk around. Historical buildings, every type of museum, zoos, Shed Aquarium, and sports teams are places to go/see.
