I grew up in Boca Raton and i am going to go to the closest university by my house, FAU, while all my friends are going away. Since FAU is a commuter college, i'm scared I wont meet many people and end up with no social life. Will joining a sorority help? I will be working alot though since i will have to be paying rent and i wont have alot of extra time or money. Would that be a problem when in a sorority? I didnt participate much in my highschool and i want to make up for that in college.

Being in a sorority and being low on money has definitely been a struggle. You usually have to be "paid up" to go to the fun events like exchanges and formals. I have seen a lot of great girls quit because they couldn't keep up with the dues and it's sad to see them go. I don't know about the other sororities, but mine offers payment plans that are really helpful.
Being in a sorority is also a big time commitment, but it can be done. I have sisters that are taking 18 hours, working part-time, and still making it to the events. Yes they have their breakdowns at times but they say its worth it. Most Greek orgs have a Participation Point System which means you have to go to x amount of events. With my sorority, if you can't make it all you have to do is shoot an email and you are excused.
If you go through rush, definitely ask ask ask questions to see how the sororities can work around you, it shouldn't be you working for the sorority. If its something you really want to do, I say go for it - try it out, you can always stop at anytime.
But I also joined other organizations (Student Government Association, an Honors org) on my campus and have met a lot of great people too. I am closer to my sisters, but its nice to meet people outside of that realm too.
Hope this helps!

Chances are if the school you are going to is a commuter school most of the sisters will be commuters as well. My suggestion to you is look around and see what organization you feel the most comfortable with. Greek Life is a very different social circle and you will meet alot of people from different organizations. Do research on the organziation what they are about, what activites they have done on campus etc, is it a local, regional or national organiztion? How involved are the alumna. It does cost money and time but often times you can make up money by doing fundraisers, payment plans etc. I'm an alumna and I'm still very active why my organization so it all depends on what you are looking for. Don't feel presured to join a particular organization. When you find the right one you'll know. Good Luck

Well I am in a sorority and i think its great. A lot of people say when you join a sorority you are paying for you friends but that is not true at all. The bond you make with your sisters in a sorority is unlike any other friendship. You laugh with your sisters and cry with them. It takes a good amount of time to be in a sorority and attend all the events, so if you think you have the time to put into it then by all means i suggest it because it is a lotta fun and you will makes life long friends.

If you don't have time or money then a sorority may not be right for you. They have expensive dues that you have to pay, as well as a full schedule of activities that you must participate in, especially during rush. If you want to get more involved, you should join some clubs, which are more casual and a lot less expensive than sororities.

Joining a sorority can be very helpful, but it can be expensive to join. The amount of time you put into it is up to you. But if you don't feel like you can relate to any of the orgs see if your school has a commuter student association. If you have declared a major join an org that's related to it.

All of them looked like Barbie dolls? I find that hard to believe. Are they better looking, on average, the rest of the female student body? I don’t know, maybe. Sororities and fraternities may try to keep someone who doesn’t look the part out, but a lot of it based on you have a mother/father, brother/sister who was in that organization, prior. And if you can pay the dues. That’s important. It’s basically like fantasy land for middle to middle-upper class white kids.

i think it will help ur social life alot, but thats not the only way to meet new people, after all u'll have classes with just about so many different people. so dont think that a sorority is the only way to make new friends.
and i understand u cuz i myself am on my way to college
