You guys don't get why the 360 cant play all original xbox games. Do you?
Theres this thing called code. And this code evolves from consol to consol. In order to play a last gen game on the 360 the 360 must have the means to indvidualy read each games code and transform it in to the new stuff. This prosses is called emululation. It acts as a middle man converting the code.
Unfourantuly this emoualtion code is very hard to wright.
And just the nature of code it takes memory. What does a hard drive have? Memory.
That was a little insite in a simple fourm

I'm pretty sure you could, but I am not 100% positive. Take the PlayStation as an example. You could play Games from the first Playstation, on the second PlayStation. But You can't play PlayStation2 games on the 3rd one. Weird eh? That's how they make more money, and that's just how they work! Maybe you should ask your local game store! I'm sure they'll help you out.

The X360 is supposed to have 'reverse compatibility' for some games (most of the popular ones) from the original XBox - *IF* you get the deluxe model, *and* go to their website to download the patch for that game. Rumor has it the next generation of 360's will have the reverse compatibility pre-programmed, but that's not confirmed.
