Using the point-slope form of a line, find the equation of the line that passes through the point (2,1) with slope -2/3.

Would the X-intercept be 3 or 3.5? and then the slope...I just need help.

Thank you all for the help

y = mx + b

sub 1 for y and 2 for x

1 = -2/3(2) + b
1 = -4/3 + b
b = 7/3

y = -2/3x + 7/3

sub 0 for y to get x
0 = -2/3x + 7/3
-7/3 = -2/3x
x = 3.5

hope this helps.

y =-2/3x+n as the line passes through (2,1) 1= -4/3+n ,so n=7/3
y= -2/3x +7/3

y = -(2/3)x + 7/3

(y-1)=-2/3(x-2) point slope form

y-1=-2/3x+4/3 distribute

y=-2/3x+7/3 get y by itself.

That is your equation.

y=mx+c

1=(-2/3*2)+c

1=-4/3 + c

c= 7/3

Hence the equation is: y=-2/3x + 7/3

The line intersects the x-axis when y=0, so:

0= -2/3x +7/3

x = (-7/3)/(-2/3)

x = 21/6= 3.5

Hope it helped

HI there, if you use the standard formula for a simple linear equation ie. y=mx + b and substitute -2/3 for m and plot this function on some graphing paper you should be able to determine the x intercept quite easily.

2007-02-18 05:55:14 · answer #6 · answered by Tom M 2 · 0 0

y= -2/3x+b
1 = -2/3(2)+b
1 = -4/3+b
1+4/3 = b
7/3 = b

equation is y = -4/3x + 7/3 (or 2.33)

to get the x intercept, you let y = 0
so..
0 = -4/3x + 2.3
0-2.3 = -4/3x
-2.3 = -4/3x

you solve for x, and so the x intercept would be 2 if i calculated right.

factor-Slope Equation of a Line y – y1 = m(x – x1), the place m is the slope and (x1, y1) is a factor on the line. factor-slope is the form used maximum regularly whilst looking the equation of a line.
