You check your memory by going to My Computer and you should see it there on the left hand side.

You cannot upgrade it without a chip, and yes it does effect startup speed.

First of all, you can't get more memory without buying another chip. To check the amount of memory you have (I'm assuming you are talking about RAM, not the Hard Drive, as it is not a chip), Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete at the same time. This will open Windows Task Manager. Click the "Performance" tab, and to check the amount of memory used out of the total memory, checl the "Phisical Memory (K) box.

Also, jeff c, he was not talkign about his hard drive.

Yes it does affect your start up speed. and I think that you don't have money to buy a chip. To increase your start up speed, try to disable some of your start up programs. Instant messengers are known to slow down your PC. You might have spy-ware or viruses running in the background. Do a virus check and remove any potential threats.

You may check your memory by right clicking "my computer" under properties.
