I am a student right now and I have noticed that when my friends do poorly on an exam they, understandably, feel bad about it. I want to try to help them feel better and not so depressed; however, I feel if I just say "It's ok, you'll do better next time," it doesn't make them feel better. Any suggestions of what I can do/say? Appreciate it. :)

you cant make people 'feel better', only they can. you can however engage in conversation that fosters growth for them. ask why they think they didnt do so well. walk them through their thoughts. often times people who dont perform well in school are either smarter than the course and bored, or have insecurities about themselves. schedule study sessions with them and make sure they have the curriculum absorbed and do well on the test. then point out how great it makes them feel. they will equate the effort in studying to be worthwhile.

It may not be better for them because it reminds them of past times people said that and it didn't get better. Oh, here we go again, old pattern.
True listening will help more than advice. People have a deficeit in being listened to and are filled up with advice.Let them tell you more about it. Empathize with their situation not necessarily with your own story, but sometimes. Try to put yourself in their shoes and feel it. Ask what they think might be a good thing to do. They down deep, have the answer, both you and she need to discover that.
