The basic reason you would want to read music is so you can talk notes, chords, and arrangements with other musicians.

Some musicians started out playing without knowing a note of sheet music. Picking arrangements on the strings with their fingers and strumming/picking until they found chords or finger placements that sounded good.

Later the benefit of knowing how to read the music became clear and they also became writers of music.

yes. the chords on the guitar are made up of all different notes. to play those notes you need to read music. if you get a fingering chart for the chords, you will be able to play, but you won't know very much except and you will keep needing to look back at your fingering chart

You can,but it's not necessary.. Just chords and lyrics might be fun for you.. If you really want to advance on any instrument.. sight reading is great.. Musicians Institute in L.A. has a great easy to understand book on sight reading. Have fun with it..

you don't have to, but if you want to advance beyond playing recitals at your cousin's bar mitvah, it might be a good idea to learn.
