A word of caution free download sites are free for a reason. When you download free software you can be infecting your computer with all types of ad-ware, site tracers, front and back door trojans, and tricky now you have to pay to keep the free software running. Do not get caught up in the game of free downloads you will start to have all types of problems with your computer and the worst part is that when it's free antivirus it will tell you about all the viruses it catches but fail to tell you that it might be adding a few of its own viruses just in case you don't buy the software once the free trial is over. Be careful and best of luck, it is better to spend the money to buy an antivirus program from the store than to have to repair an infected computer that you thought was protected when you downloaded the free antivirus software.

There are some good free versions of anti-virus programs you could try such as "avg free edition" or "PC tools anti-virus". Please be aware that these programs do not have access to all of the updates and features that the "paid" versions offer. Also note that PC world ranked Bit Defender 9 as the best anti-virus program on the market (it received a 92 out of 100) followed by McAfee virus scan (87 out of 100). Here is the link to avg: free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
Hope this helps!

For basic security required by personal users, you require ONE anti-virus, ONE firewall and at least TWO anti-spyware. I have given the links to the best you can have for free, in each category. Get them all.
AVG(Download this : avg75free_432a904.exe): http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/...
a-squared Free(Download a-squared FREE): http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/down...
Windows Defender(only for genuine Windows XP): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...
Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/...
To activate the real-time protection of Windows Defender, go to Tools > Options and tick 'Use Real Protection'. In case you don't have genuine Windows, you can use Spyware Terminator as a good substitute to Windows Defender.
http://www.spywareterminator.com/...
Here are some security tips:
1.Never use more than one anti-virus or firewall. There is a good possibility that they will fight each other. However, you can use as many anti-spywares as you wish, provided you use the real-time protection of only one of them.
2.Always keep the real-time scanning of your anti-virus and any one of your anti-spyware active. This feature always runs in the background and scans every file before it is opened, warning you if the file has any attached malware to it. Real-time scanning is known by different names for different security software, so don’t get confused. The most popular ones are ‘Real-time protection’, ‘Resident shield’, ‘Virus / Spyware Guard’ etc.
3.Keep all your security software updated, and manually scan your computer for spyware every 4-5 days and for viruses every 8-10 days. Most security software imply the use of automatic daily scanning, which is unnecessary and slows down the computer.

if the norton wont update anymore uninstall it , AVG is good except if your running nero burning software, they clash on mine.
As for mccaffe idf you have sbc its free, if not after the time period is over they will know it unless you use different email address and really do a good job of uninstalling it plus cleanning you registry of any entries that refer to it.
i would suggest ccleaner and adaware also for lots of reasons :)
