why are people homosexuals? is there a purpose for this? are they born with it or does it develop over time? is it something about their anatomy or is it caused by humans (meaning child molesters, rapists, sexual predators, etc.)?

No one knows for certain, though many have their own opinions, but here is an article on research related to homosexuality and genetics.

Considering that various species display homosexual tendencies, it can't all be caused by other humans. I'm sure some people become sexually confused by traumatic events, but not every person is gay because they were molested when they were younger.

There's no evidence to suggest it's a choice, as gays and lesbians exist all over the world, even in cultures that would KILL them for saying it out loud. Faced with such a negative, abusive environment, who would choose to live as a gay person?

Science is slowly finding biological evidence, yes. But that's the thing with science - rarely will scientists or the medical community ever find a DIRECT source for anything. It takes a long time to find all causes involved, and science is always evolving. What they're finding now are "hints" or correlational data - things that point to biological causes but can't be the one and only cause, or source, of homosexuality. They're looking at twin studies (if one twin is gay, the other has a 50% chance of being gay) and prenatal hormonal studies (a mother with many sons has a likelihood of her younger sons being gay), and they're finding interesting results. But will they be able to pinpoint a cause right away? No. It's like that with many things in science. You can't just do one or two experiments and expect to find an answer - real life isn't like Mythbusters.

It is obvious, however, that nobody can influence someone else to be homosexual. If a young boy was molested by a man, why would he grow up to be attracted to men? That doesn't make sense. The majority (95%) of child predators are straight, white men, not gay men.

its like this. a women has to many bad man in her life so she turns to women, a man gets hurt to many times so he turns gay, as for the rapists, well they like to take control over the other, hurt makes them happy, child molesters, well they r very sick minded and should not be alive, but who am i to say, some people think its normal as this is how the grew up in their family as it was on the news many yrs ago, but i dont beleive it. trying to enter into the mind as to why man and women do what they do, well it just cant be done, the truth never comes out, not the real full truth so no their isnt a scientific explanation as to why this is. but things happen cause of what has happened to them, and they try to make other way to b happy but thats with the gay man an women
maybe the gay's like it better that way, yes some are born like it, not many, while others just like to try different things in their teen's

I haven't seen any credible studies that have shown that it is caused by humans. I have seen MANY credible studies to show that people are born that way.

As for purpose, I'm not sure exactly why this would be.

And as for the first answerer, it isn't a choice, no matter how much you want to believe that is the case. Quit deceiving yourself!

Like all primates, there is a real value in a portion of the population being focused on survival of the family instead of propagation of it's own DNA. In other words, I can help out my sibling's kids more because I don't have kids of my own. Plus humans use social interaction for survival, and a person who is not productive (meaning reproductive) is free to make social connections that a mating competitor is not. For example, I can get closer to my straight friends because the guy knows I am not going to try to get with his wife.

So... is there a scientific reason for sterile people to have sex? Or older people? Is there a scientific explanation for oral sex? You can't apply a scientific standard to one subgroup and get valid data.
