I heard soooooooooo many people say AOL protection sucks, doesn't work, and is very slow or may even make their comp run slow. So far, I have Ad-aware SE personal (which a comp tech downloaded for me) and Windows Defender, but I would like to know other free services that will keep my comp spyware and virus free. Do U know any?All answers would be greatly appreciated:)

so I work for a computer shop...I am a part time tech and we only use avg as the antivirus because norton slows down your computer just like the rest of them. The tech did the right thing by putting adaware on there for you. go get avg from free.grisoft.com it free. oh and aol does suck. we always go with avg and adaware and only those two. They dont slow u down.

Remove AOL Protection. Then, install Avast or AVG anti-virus. Only one AV allowed per PC!

Anti-spyware: Defender and AdAware are both good. You should also use Spybot and Spyware Blaster. No single program catches everything.

Firewall: A router is best. Zone Alarm or Kerio are better than the Windows firewall.

TIP: Learn all you can about "Windows security" on Google. the best defence against the Nasties is knowledge!

Spyware is a big problem huh? Good thing there is lots of software to get rid of it. I agree with the so many people on AOL protection. It does suck. However, I run not just one but THREE anti-spyware software.
They are

-Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.spybot.com)
This is my personal favorite

-Adaware (you already have it)
This gets the stuff spybot misses

-Windows Defender (you have it)
Windows Defender does not do much, but it is ok to have as a precaution. It does not slow down your system much.

These are the software I use on a regular basis. I recommend you do a scan with spybot every day, and the others every week.

take a look at http://www.comparespywareremoval.com/ it has a pretty good break down of the various options. Most of hte free stuff handles malware spyware alright, but does not do that great a job at AV. So avoid clicking on files you dont know someone sent you.

McAfee and Norton anti virus are two top notch anti-virus programs and there are many others also. Do a web search for anti-virus software and you will be able to come up with a lot of information on this subject.

I really like AVG and it's free! You can download it here and also read up on the latest in spyware, adware, and virus protection. Very helpful site! http://spyware.dugancom.com/
