My backyard is all dirt.. very, very hard dirt. I would like to grow grass and will be doing it myself to save money. How do I break up that hard dirt? Is there a tool or machine? After that is done (the hard part) do I just lay seed and manure on top? Then water? Could I possibly find someone that will just break up the dirt and prepare it for me so I can plant... how much do you think that would cost? I am in southern CA.

you need to get a tiller it is made for breaking up hard dirt and then smooth out with a rake but there is a rake machine also u can get then lay your seed and water but those machines are dangerous so just call a landscaping company and they will do all the work for u it does not cost that much good luck and have a nice day.

A rototiller is your best bet. You can usually rent them by the hour. After you spread your seed, lightly rake it in the dirt to keep it in place. If you dont, the rain might wash it away. Good Luck!!

Something folks are forgetting to tell you--birds love grass seed. So you will need to find a way to keep them from eating it all. That's why you see straw a lot of times.
