I have this issue as well. Regular ballpoint pens, like bics, slow down my writing and usually make it harder to read. If I'm writing slowly, a ballpoint pen is fine.

The pen I tend to use now is a rollerball, Pilot Precise V5, not a gel pen, but my writing tends to be more legible with that when I write quickly.

Unless there's a reason you have to use a basic ballpoint, just keep a pen on you that you can write well with and it shouldn't be a problem.

My best guess is that you're a person who writes quickly. The gel ink flows over the paper faster than the ball point pen which would tend to "grab" the paper.

Maybe it's because you're so used to using gel pens, that, that is the only writing utensil that you good at writing with.
Try using ball point pen more often and see what happens!! Who knows! Maybe it'll acually work!! lol
