You're supposed to go easy on it (ie: no jack rabbit starts and such) for about 600 miles, I believe. Just remember, in that break in period try not to drive at the same speed for a long period of time. What happens is that the engine starts to "break in" at the constant engine speed you are going so that when other rpm ranges are used, they don't work as well as they would if you had broken it in at various rpms. So if you must take a long distance trip in a new car, try varying your speed a little.

The cars of today, honestly dont really need a break in period, but 500 miles is a safe number, that doesnt mean do 120 on the fwy, you are safe at 55-65 for the first 500 miles, just dont rev the hell out of the engine, and definately not right at start up.

5000 miles is a good bit for a car .
thats the first oil change.
its not so much how fast you go its how long you go that speed.
at the very first dont try to see how fast it will go for sure.
but if your driving on the highway most people say just dont sit at 60 or any other speed slow down speed up is better.
as long as you dont treat it like a race car your fine .
you should change the oil no later then 5 000 miles or sooner is better. keep an eye on all fuild levels and gauges and thats about it.

honestly todays car do not need a break-in period. When I bought my 06 acura in Nov. I drove it from Pa where I bought it new to NC where I live- 700+ miles averaging 70+ miles an hour. The dealer told me that would be fine. I have owned it 3 months now with 7,000 miles on it-no problems

Usually about the first 5,000 miles, check your owners manual. This breakin period allows all the engine and transmission parts to seat properly.
