Gives them something to talk about when the whole fan damily is sitting around on the porch on a hot summer night and Ole Uncle Jake is a pickin' and a grinnin' on the ole banjo! (I guess. I do have some hill billy ancestors!)

They're old wives tales because they are false!
Some examples:

-You can't go swimming until half an hour after you eat
-If you cross your eyes too much they'll stay that way

They're basically white lies that mothers or wives would tell to get their child/husband to do what they want.

Most old wives tales were based on superstitions and many are untrue. It was just a way to explain things they did not understand.

That's weird you ask that because this man at work told me his mother wouldn't let her purse sit on the floor because that meant she'd be broke. I started putting mine up on my desk! LoL!
