Black is the absence of light. Since colors describe light, the lack of light can't really be considered a color.
White, on the other hand, is the presence of all colors of light. Since it is the presence of all colors and cannot be white without other colors, then it isn't really a color either but a combination of colors.

Individual colors are usually defined as those resulting in the "spectrum" when sunlight is refracted through a crystal prism. Sunlight it considered as "white light" because it contains all the colors. White light contains all colors so it cannot of itself be an individual color.
When there is no color, there is no light and black results. Black would not be listed as a color because it is the absence of color.

Well some people do, but for those who don't, the answer is this: In the color spectrum, when the three primary colors or two complimentary colors (Primaries are red, blue, and green and an example of complimentary are yellow and violet.) are brought together they create a white light. Hence, white light is only a mixture of the other colors, while black is from no color whatsoever.

Black objects don't reflect any light they just absorb it which we see as black so technically it isn't a color.
A white objects reflect all the colors of the rainbow equally so technically white isn't a color either.
