I spent most of my summer holidays in Derry when I was little when the troubles were really bad. I loved going there staying with my grandparents - best memories ever.
Anyone who thinks that NI is a violant land have most probably never been and therefore can't fully appreciate the beauty of the country and its people.
Look at Manchester and Birmingham in the news - everyone will be saying their bad places when they're not too - if they listen to the media.
Watch for the thumbs down on this one

For years all of us Americans were exposed to news clips of bombings, etc. in Northern Ireland. Of course if the bombings have stopped and everything is peaceful that would never make the news.

During the Irish Troubles,
here in the mainland UK,
we had, thanx 2 Ms Thatcher, a complete media black out regarding the progress within the Irish Peace Process,
i guess in readiness should it all go wrong!
we HEARD nothing of what was going on.
it was lifted slowly, once Major had taken over,
but we've not had a ANY real idea what's going on.
sorry.
some i guess, including me r stuck thinking the IRA R ready 2 stretch their wings & wants on Northern Ireland all over again.
we're not being deliberately dumb, just
comes from a 3 Decades of being MISINFORMED.

It's because of what happened during "The Troubles". If you ask people now to describe Beirut, they'd say the same thing. It's all a misconception. People believe what they want to believe. The same as they think that Southern Ireland is full of Guinness and leprechauns, Wales is full of sheep and dragons , Scotland's full of men in kilts and whiskey (e?), and England's full of men who speak like Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins and Black Taxis. It's all about stereotyping of people and places.

yeah man once I walked into a park in northern irland and the trees tried to eat me. Another time I was near a lake and the water formed a facial shape and chased me trying to eat me. The worst was when I went to the semetary and the zombies got up and chased me, one ugly fat one grabbed me, oh it stunk bad, it said pis of and I slapped it and ran to the ferry back to the main land. Oh what an experiance

I think like everything else, people are filled with misconceptions. I live in America, i'm sure there's all kinds of things people think about a trip to america that are completely wrong.
