This was 1979 under the Carter Administration--imagine that!!Osama Bin Laden turned against US during the gulf war, when US troops were stationed in Saudi Arabia. He believed Saudi to be holy land and should never have the infidels walking in it.
Following the first Gulf War, Al Qaeda shifted its focus to fighting the growing U.S. presence in the Middle East, particularly in Saudi Arabia, home to Islam’s most sacred mosques. Al Qaeda opposed the stationing of U.S. troops on what it considered the holiest of Islamic lands and waged an extended campaign of terrorism against the Saudi rulers who did business with the US or Western Europe. The focus shifted to attacks in Bali, Indonesia, Phillipines, UK, Spain, Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania, and the US mainland.

Osama bin Laden was never trained or supplied by the US that is a mythical tale. We did however have a common goal at one point of keeping the Soviet Union from expanding into Afganistan. That is where the connection ends.
