Tortoise - no tank water to change, no filters to unclog, easier to feed, they interact more with their owners, they live longer (well, I guess this can be a disadvantage, too!), and they don't ALL get big. I've owned both. The website madkins gave you is a good one!

Having experianced both turtles and tortoises, I would say tortoises hands down. You dont have to feed them as many bugs(if at all) and they dont require $200^ in filters, tanks, etc.

Turtles are, however, very amusing to watch. They are easy to care for if you know what you're doing, and a few regular fish-filters will work well in a turtle tank. However, they grow faster and would need a LARGE aquarium for winter(as they should be outside in summer). This would mean either having a large aquarium all year, or setting it up every fall and bringing it down every spring. Tortoises need to be inside for winter too(unless you know how to safely let them hybernate). They require almost a room of space, but no large, heavy fishtank full of water.

Tortoises are much more friendly and dont simply beg for food. My russian tort, Emi, follows me to the bathroom when I am getting her water(while I'm cleaning the cage, I let the girls out cuz they're too curious and always get in the way).

Basically, do your homework. You may find that your preference is turtles, instead of tortoises! Also, turtles are a lot less expensive.

At any rate, keep us updated! I love talking with turtle.tortoise people!

If you can't provide an outside pen or small backyard pond for it to be in at least during warm weather, then neither is recommended. Turtles and tortoises are MUCH easier to maintain and keep healthy if they are outside during warm months. See this site to help you decide what you want:

WEll let me tell you the differences.

Turtles-They require water. But other things are the same.So you have to fill your tank with rocks and water.
Tortises-The difference betwenn the two is turtles perfer water while tortoises live on land.So all you need is sand and rocks for tortoises so yes tortises are easyer than turtles.

A tortoise is going to be much bigger than a turtle. So if your prepared for it i'd say the tortoise.

Myself, I would chose a tortoise, they are cleaner and easier to feed, not that turtles aren't easy to feed but they spend most of the time in the water and the water fouls up pretty quick.Turtle tanks must be kept clean in order to keep them and you healthy!

id rather turtles but they are ALOT LOT harder to maintain (clean water/heaters/filters/air pumps/live fish) but i reckon its worth it- plus youd have to get a massive cage for tortises
my turtles are alot of fun though- when ever i comenear there tank they paddle up and stick there top half out of the water and do like backstroke trying to get food

A turtle is better unless you have a 5 foot cage.
