i have only turned pessimistic in the last 10 years i'd say. i think i'ts because of the fact that i expect things to be a certain way, or people to do a certain thing, or things of that nature, and then when they don't the disappointment is worse than the anticipation. so after so many psyche ups and let downs, it starts to get tough, so we learn to not look forward to good things happening to us because we have been proved wrong so many times before. there are things you can do, exercise can help some, but again, being a pessimist and a non athletic type person, that too bumms me out, because why should i have to work at seeing things as good, when it appears as if everyone around me sees things in a different light regardless of their effort. plus i'm lazy. laziness and pessimism lead to depression, so i try to at least go for walks and get outside. it helps a little.

Why are all those crackheads out there taking so much crack when they aren't even addicted to crack!?

What the hell? Pessimism isn't about things that are already going well. Pessimism really is about impacting future decisions. Pessimists act defensively - probably as a result of repeated bad past experiences that served no learning purpose - that is, there was no useful lesson to be learned in terms of improving or changing behavior. For example, I am extremely pessimistic about going out on Friday and Saturday night to meet women. Why? Lots of bad experiences - sometimes as a RESULT of me being successful... For example, that time I successfully started seeing a woman that turned out to have borderline personality disorder and proceeded to make my life a living hell for a while. Lesson learned? Don't pick up women that have borderline personality disorder. How do you avoid that? Good question. Most women seem a little flakey these days and few BPD women show their real colors when you meet her.

Really, it's a matter of luck. It's like that dumbass statement that God must exist because everything is perfect. What that person is saying is that they think God exists because things have been going well for them. It makes you wonder if their faith would continue if their life was truely and totally screwed over for a long time. My guess is they wouldn't make it throgh 1/2 of the Job treatment.

So, let's take an optimist that is having a horrible time, but is still optimistic. Please point this person out. We could learn something from this person... if not, at least we can say the person is insane.

If my theory on this is correct, then what I am saying about optimists - and particularly optimists that patronize pessimists - is that they are abusive jerks. If the pessimist can recognize this, turn it against them, and destroy their life through legal measures, then we will have a true test of that person's optimism, won't we. Good luck with your experiment!

I don't know why pessimistic look at life the way they do.With that dark, and bad foretelling.Optimists know just as well that bad things could happen but they suffer less.Because the pessimistic suffers before the bad things happen, during the suffering and after by expecting it again.I think they're just scared to live the short happy things when you should actually enjoy while they're there.Optimists, try to look at life in good way. They deal with bad luck,by just accepting it for what it exactly is : bad luck.
They heal from our wounds, and let the show go on.Negative people, sit through their pain and stop the whole play because of all the pain that happened, and the pain to come. That's just the way it is.Some people have a positive outlook, others dont.

Why are we so pessimistic even when all is going right??????
Clearly you are not a pessimist.
Life is seldom smooth sailing to a Pessimist. To others it may be, but that is what defines the Pessimist. Their ability to find a negative to every situation.
To some degree we all experience this type of behaviour in life. Those feelings of "Bad luck always happens to me" is a way of taking control of a situation, as strange as that may sound. By preparing and waiting for the worst to happen, the blow of failure doesnt hit so hard when it happens. People will say things like "see, I knew that was going to happen, I knew I wouldnt get the job" etc. Accurately predicting yet another windfall shifts the focus from the actual let down/failure itself.
Life is full of good and bad situations, ups and downs, fortune and misfortune, health & illness - We never know what the dice will roll.
I think Ive sat here pondering your question, ' Why cant we enjoy life...etc, for over half an hour. I feel like Im in my Philosophy class all over again. Fantastic Question - Bloody hard to answer.
It may be too subjective to provide an overall general answer. Its Interesting how complex I found it initially, staring at it for1/2 hour like it was a cryptic puzzle.
Then it hit me. Theres nothing complex or challenging about this question at all, quite the contrary.
The question itself is really quite clear and simple. Yet I elaborated on it for 30 minutes. So thank-you for that moment of clarity you gave me.
The answer to why cant we enjoy life...cannot come from me or anyone else.
So, you tell me... why dont YOU just enjoy your life, rather than waiting for bad to happen?
Keep asking yourself over and over until every reason you think of diminish leaving you without an answer.
And there will be the answer to your question.

One last point. Ideally one should always strive to keep an optimistic (positive) frame of mind, not be a pessimist nor an overt optimist.
I consider myself a Realist, or at least thats what I try to be. My Feet firmly on the ground & balanced. I may fail, I might suceed. I might win, I might lose. I might experience a disaster, But I might Not.
And I d rather keep it an even 50/50 chance.

Cheers & Be Happy. Its just so much easier to be!!!!

No matter how optimist we are, or how optimist we claim we are to the world, there is a hidden negativity or pessimism. This is specially for people who have had a series of negative things happening in their life, that its absolutely impossible for them to imagine that things can go right. Things are so good, and so good to the way of our imagination, that we always anticipate, that may be, just may be, something is wrong somewhere.

It is absolutely so impossible to be perfect that we think ''okay, so wheres the catch?!!"". Sometimes it is good, cos' when we anticipate this, and things go good, you love it. It makes a difference to your own achievements. And although it contradicts to your pessimism, you still anticipate. With the first time, second, or thirdl. Nothing is perfect, is what it tells u. And there is nothing wrong in being an optimist with certain risks that you may anticipate. Again, you are only being realistic, instead of being in a dream world thinking everything is 100% alright. If it is wrong, you correct it and move on to your next optimist expectation. And its a circle. You do perfect, but something has a twist. In fact, I think its good cos' thats a way to actually love your own hard work...

As far as luck is concerned, if you are a true optimist, you accept it as luck, as your target may have been manipulated under certain influences like your approach, you being misunderstood, perhaps someone better than you not qualitatively, but quantitatively, as in good looks, or good speech, or..something tat has nothing to do with talents.....

No one can be a true optimist. It is so difficult to percieve a world of ''only true optimists''. No one is a hundred percent optimist...and hey, your question is good. It is thought provoking.

hope everythign is ''optimistic'' with u...

good luck

you probably feel like that, because something once happened to you, which screwed things up so much, you have literally given up, and you don't have much hope for anything.
i'm a pretty happy person, i'm not sure if i'd call me self optimistic, i am at times. well i really think that you're born being an optimist. how they deal with bad luck? well normally when you think everything has gone bad and wrong, you don't notice all the good things that have come out of it.....obviously that can't apply to all situations, but hey it can to most.
optimists think about the situation and realise that it's not as bad as they think....

well when something is going right, pessimist are pessimistic because they are scared that that good situation is going to end quickly. they dont enjoy life because they think of the bad sides of it instead of the good sides. When optimists have bad luck, they figure out a way of solving it or figure out the good side in bad luck (dont know what it is lol). if u r a pessismist just try to see the bright side about everything. that way, u will have a MUCH BETTER life. hope that helped!

I don't really think of myself as a pessimist or an optimist.. more a realist.

Yes to face problems before you come to them is a waste of energy, but as too is hedonistically enjoying the good times in the belief that bad times won't come back.

The key I think is to accept the good and the bad in this life in the same hand. During bad times know that in time it will pass. In good times know to enjoy the moment and appreciate it etc

Even the terms good/bad are a bit artbitary.. as we all have relations/friends etc it is impossible NOT to at some point encounter challenges.. we are mortal, we are social, we get ill, get upset etc etc

The bigger picture is much more important - if you are happy you are happy for a moment, sad/angry etc all the same.. no-one can live in permanent bliss.. so to expect to do so is to fundamentally misunderstand the nature of life/humanity..

No-one's life is perfect but the best advice is to always hope for the best but be prepared for the worst.

Right. I'm an optimist, too. When anything goes wrong, I become a pessimist till it's over.
