I tried changing it in 'display', but the 'none' feature wouldn't work. All I can do is change the color to be used as a background.

OMG! Same thing happened to me a long time ago! Well what I did was system re-store, Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. From there select the date where the icons where normal and your PC will go back in time to the date where all was normal with your icons

try clicking on the "start" icon in lower left hand corner...in the new window that comes up, click on "control panel"...next a new menu will appear with different categories...click on "appearances and themes"..then click on "desktop background"..then that will lead u to a list of all the pics or files u may have to use...click on the one u want then click "ok"....
