What exactly is the purpose of putting your soc sec number on the application when getting a job? Is it just for tax purposes or do they use it to verify your information. Also could I lie about my birthday while still giving them correct info about me in the other fields?

They will need your SSN to run a background check on you. But technically you are supposed to give permission for that. If you feel uncomfortable about it, I would ask if they really need it. You can give it to them after you have been hired.

I wouldn't lie about your birthday. If they do hire you, they'll need date of birth for other new hire forms.

No reputable employer is going to ask for your birthday anyway. Age is protected by law against discrimination and if they are an equal opportunity employer (as they must be) then the only age related question they may ask is if you are at least eighteen years of age. I always wondered about putting social security numbers on job apps, too, because of identitiy theft being so rampant. They do use the number to run background, sometimes even credit checks. But I think they should only ask this after deciding to interview someone.

Your social security number and birth date are confidential information and shouldn't be given to a prospective employer. Your social security number should only be given to an employer if you're a serious candidate for the job and they need to do a criminal background/credit check. Your birth date is irrelevant for anything except a health insurance application.

In any case, you're better off not lying anywhere on a job application. It can automatically disqualify you for a job if you're caught.

Job applications should not request your birthdate. By giving them your birthdate they could determine your age which is an illegal question to ask, I would leave it blank right along with the SSN spot. I don't think they need that info until after you have been offered a position.

You do not have to and SHOULD not give your SSN unless you are hired. The only exceptions would be federal jobs.
