Just bought a 3 year old filly two weeks ago. She has ate hay this whole time like it is going out of style. She WILL NOT eat any oats, pellets, carrots, apples, apple horse treats you name it that you put in front of her. At first I though maybe she was just home sick but it has been long enough I thought! She has some in her feed tub in her stall. She mouths it, will take in some but will not actually sit there and eat it. I am working her to start her under saddle but she has dropped weight considerably in the last week or so by just light lunging. I wormed her yesterday also!! The pervious owner said that she had gotten oats by hand as a "treat" and she hasn't actaully been on a "diet" She loves her hay and drinks lots of water as well. Please help as I need ideas to help her to get her weight up and some energy in to her system. I am going to go out and buy some molasses today and try that. If that doesn't work........I don't know what to do. Thanks Sarah

Try something like sweet feed. It's way better than just putting plain sugar in feed. You could also try mixing some plain applesauce (unsweetened) in with her oats. It is definitely good that she at least eats hay. I would also start talking to the vet about exactly how much feed and hay your horse should get every day. Too much hay is not a good thing just like too much oats is not a good thing. Feed her according to her body weight. The people that you bought her from definitely made a mistake in only feeding oats as a treat. She definitely needs more nutrition and substance. Hope this helps!

I think you should maybe try to mix her hay with grain or something.. I dont understand why someone would raise a horse to only eat hay, and then sell it.

Maybe try a different grain like sweet feed, rice bran, or any other commercial horse grain. My horse didn't like oats, but he loves his rice bran!
