But for the past 2 weeks or so he has been waking up at least twice per night. I breast feed him like always, but he does not seem satisfied and won't go back to sleep until he drinks a bottle of formula. I am currently breastfeeding and formula feeding during the day. I was thinking maybe he's going through a growth spurt or maybe he's teething. I even took him out of his cradle and put him in his big crib because I thought he may not be comfortable, but that still did not help. I was thinking of giving him cereal in a bottle of formula before bed, but wasn't sure how to make it up. Do I cut the nipple to make it larger? Does anyone have any other suggestions as to why he is getting up again and what Ican do?

Yes It sounds like your baby is having a growth spurt. He should return to normal sleeping patterns in a few weeks. It'snot a good Idea to feed cereal in a bottle and never good to poke holes in a nipple!! If you want to start feeding him cereal do it during the day always at the same time and start with only a few teaspoons mixed with formula or breast milk.

Never, never feed a baby cereal from a bottle. It's not a good idea, because eating solids is something new for baby and he needs to get used to it. And having baby eat cereal at night is no guarantee that he'll sleep through the night. You should wait to start baby on any solids until he's six months old, unless otherwise told by your pediatrician. Baby is probably going through some changes with his body right now. Just hang in there and he'll be okay!

18 weeks old and he hasnt had baby cearal yet? I gave my children cereal thru a nipple at 4 months, and i cut the nipple slightly just enough.
Hes waking up cause he is hungry. HIS APPITITE IS GROWING. Both my kids slept thru the night at about 4 weeks and the reason is they went to sleep full. Before he goes to sleep feed him stage 1 baby food and formula, not breast milk. He may not be getting enough breast milk.

At his age yu should only be adding a tablespoon or so to his bottle so a bigger nipple is not necessary. I am very surprised that he slept through the night at such an early age. But is is totally normal that he is waking up hungry now, he should start sleeping through the night (6-7 hours) at about 6 months. good luck! :)

It might be time to start giving him rice cereal during the day. My son's pediatrician recommended starting cereal between 4 and 6 months. After his 4 month appt, she said to start him on rice cereal when he wasn't sleeping through the night anymore. It sounds like that's where you are! He's probably just not getting the nourishment he needs during the day anymore because he's growing and his needs have increased.

Call and ask your pediatrician and see what he/she suggests.

They have special bottles for feeding cereal through a bottle, but you could try just making the hole larger. Start with just a teaspoon or two of cereal to a bottle to slightly thicken it. He is probably ready, if he is waking to be fed.

If you can, use your breast milk with the cereal instead of formula. The longer you can breast-feed your baby, the better, because breast milk contains chemicals which help your baby build his immune system.

He might be teething . to see if he is teething rub your finger in his mouth. if you feel teeth he may be teething. while you finger is in there if he bites you will know. get teething medicine like oral-b. it will make the gum numb when he put spit on the part you put it on. he should be ok for a few hours put some on before bed and see if it works
