Typically, October has a whole is very quite. October is my favorite time to visit. However, it will be more crowded this Halloween. Utah and Idaho have a teacher's conference week and all kids in these two states are out of school. This year, it falls right around Halloween and almost all families head to Disney World for that week.
I know of several families who are planning to visit WDW around Halloween time this year.

October is actually one of the best times to go to Disney World! The crowds are low and wait lines tend to be low also. The week of Halloween is often fairly good, and if you decide to do the Mickey's Not so Scary Halloween Party, it is fun on Halloween night, but tickets sell out super fast! Although if you do get the opportunity to do it that night, go for it! It's a blast and is always extra special. The characters are dressed up and many of the rides are still open and since the party is limited in number of people, wait times are normally low. Check out www.disboards.com if you have any other questions! They are the best! I hope you have a magical trip!

I took my son a couple of days before halloween in 06. Line wait for space mountain/peter pan/splash mountain, 1-1&1/2 hours. It does get worse in the summer. August and Sept are the best times to go. We did get the passes for Mickeys spooktacular and I was so happy I did. My son loved the personnal attention from the characters. Also it is the year of a million dreams. If you go early look for cast members that are in pairs and carrying over the shoulder satchels. They are giving away fastpasses to all the major rides so you can skip lines any time of the day. We were blessed enough to get these while we were there and it made my son feel like he was the king of the world. I only saw two other people with them the whole day. Enjoy Disney.

Actually, October is one of the lowest seasons. In my experience the crowds are smaller than most of the year, I really like it. The weather is also great. Plus, you will be able to get lower rates since it is value season. Of you are able to go in the beginning of October, they usually offer a really great special as well, such as free dining. But, it usually what is the few days for the September special.

If I could choose any time of the year to go to Disney, this would probably be my choice, as far as crowds and things. Just keep in mind that if you go during a value season, that can mean that some of the rides and things will be getting refurbished at that time. If you go around Halloween though you may get lucky and everything be open.

Everything the other folks said are true -- relatively low crowds (it's never NOT crowded at Disney) --

However...
I have had two trips to Orlando interrupted by tropical weather. Keep in mind that October is still hurricane season (late October less so than early) and one storm can make a Disney vacation a big disappointment in a hurry.

It really isn't that busy. It's one of the slower times of the year, but sometimes on the special nights for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party it can get a little more crowded. Hope this helps!
