i have been researching into spyware over the last 12 months and have used nearlly all the avallible anti-spyware software ,free and paid for.
from my experience i have found these are the most effective, this is based on a)spyware cleaning b)protection ability c)scan speeds
the first program i recommend is spybot search and destroy(http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html),this is a free program that has a masive user base, simply becuase of its reliability,it uses blank registry entries into fooling spyware, and also has a imunization feature which protects your p.c from future threats, note:this program should be updated weekly(the updates arrive on friday evening of each week)
the next program is spyware blasterhttp://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html,although this hasnt got a built in scanner,it works well by again stopping spyware from installing in the first place,it also works with mozzila firefox which is a added bonus
windows has a much critisised addition to vista, and also avalible for windows xp,windows defender(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en)is a excellent addition to your security software libary,it runs in the background and also scans in the same way,but is very good at detecting malicous software and removing it
finally i want to recommend a peice of software which isnt actually a spyware scanner but works in such a way that to stop it installing by warning you of dangerous websites
mcafee site advisor(http://www.siteadvisor.com/)is a briiliant concept,it gives a rating beside each website, green=ok ,yellow=caution , red=danger grey=untested ,this gives the user the warning of a bad site so you dont enter it by mistake,by letting you know the bad sites, this can reduce the incidents of spyware infection by half,i mean most of the times we have got spyware on our p.c,s is because we have accidentlly entered a infected site..great idea
there are loads of other anti-spyware tools but these are probally the most effective and safe, beware of adverts and warnings on websites stating that your p.c is infected, these are actually spyware disguised as a legitimate program..beware
i hope this has helped
good luck mate
