It can, but the check engine light can come on for any of 200 to 5000 reasons in your vehicle. Taking the vehicle to a dealership or certified repair shop, and having the diagnostics run, will tell you what is going on there. Many places will also deduct that diagnostic fee IF you get the repairs done the same day.
Good luck.

i own a repair shop and yes it will if it holds back enough pressure to make the engine run hotter the 0-2 sensor will give off a signal that will set the light of,,also temp sensor will set it off also, but it wont tell you if you need to replace the converter or not,you can take it and have a back pressure check done on it,and this will tell you if its going bad on it that's about the only way you can determine if its bad or not, good luck i hope this help,s.

If you are in the US and the car is newer than 1996, the emission system must activly check for proper catylitic conversion efficiancy and a code and light will indicate when the converter is not working. It will not detect a plugged converter or a converter with a loose substrate
