I was there for 2 days & 3 nights. Awful traffic, awful mud, awfully "improvised" "facilities", but otherwise awfully GREAT.

Became left-winger earlier at college where Tom Hayden was editor of Michigan Daily and a leader of the "Voice" political party, later merged into SDS. After graduation, went to Chicago in August '68, then moved to NYC for a job with IBM. Long hair & beards were allowed then, provided they were neat. Wore suit all week with two-toned boots, then tie-dyed T-shirts & beads on weekends.

Took Friday off, drove up to Woodstock (yes, Bethel) on Thursday night, couldn't get close but did the best we could. Music was great, people were great, pot was great. Cops were even great, at least the few I saw. Left first thing Sunday morning, had to work on Monday. Took one roll of pictures, which I have somewhere.

Sometime later during that era, our Chelsea flat became a way-station for carloads of students coming down from New England en route to Washington to protest the Vietnam War. On some Thursday and Sunday nights we probably had at least 50 kids sleeping on the floor going to or from.

Once, under the umbrella organization "National Mobilization to End the War in Vietnam," I helped "liberate" the Washington Monument. That's when you were still allowed to climb the stairs to the top.

Yeah, those were the days ...

If everyone who says "I was there" was actually there then there would have been about 20 million people at Woodstock.
