When I check the oil level, it is high & smells strongly of gas. Any ideas on how to diagnose & fix this?

Go ahead and change the oil and keep checking it. I would suspect the following... older carburated engines tend to use more fuel during cold weather than fuel injected engines which have tighter, more precise control of the fuel. My ancient 82 Honda Accord was often stubborn to start in the cold, and I often had to change the oil in it, to keep the fuel contamination under control. Now one thing that can help you out, if you have the resources, is to have the carb pulled, cleaned and rebuilt, then reinstalled. Dont forget to check the choke settings, sometimes they are adjustable. And simply take note, that as the weather warms up, you probably wont have quite the issue with that carb that you are noticing now.
Good luck.

your carb may need a rebuild , or is set too rich or your choke may not be coming completely off also if all you do is short trip driving the oil does not get up to temperature to burn off the little bit of fuel that will always get past the rings on older , carbureted engines . so change the oil (synthetic is best) and go on the highway more often.

i own a repair shop, and you don't need to remove the intake manifold on it,if this one has a mechanical fuel pump on it the pump diaphragm is busted in it,and this allows fuel to flow back through the engine, and it will ruin a good engine,if it has the electric pump it may have bad float in the carb, allowing too much as to pass through the carburetor ,,and this will cause it to do this, check the pump especially if its the mechanical pump, this will do it every time, good luck,i hope this help,s.
