My great-great grand mother lived at the head of the Kentucky river. in 1864 Yankee Calvary came through and raided the houses yankee sympathizers and Sech. 45% of southern homes were rural, dirt floor and poor. They took our quilts, every bit of food except a barrel of molasses she convinced them was bad. With her mom being dead and her father off fighting she tried to bring in crops and raise the kids. Here in Gloucester Virginia we are across the river from Yorktown, we had to build watch towers to catch them from sneaking over and kidnapping our children. They hoped to destroy morale and make the boys desert ending fighting capabilities. They did fire on civilians several times; the Army’s own records document many violations of War Crimes. When someone tried to speak up they were treated as an enemy and dealt with!
