Electrical generation by wind. They are popping up all over the place. Not too far south of where I live (the mid west US) they have a large 'wind-farm' with a series of large windmills that are used for generating electricity.

Most of them are just decorations.
Dutch use the real version of it to pump water for draining the fields so they can use it for cultivation or pasture.
To day the wind mills are producing electric power world wide. On a larger scale they are arranged like windmill farms, to supply electrical energy to whole community.

sounds like you're talking about large electric generators. basically, wind blows on them, causing the windmill to spin, which drives an internal generator that converts the mechanical rotational energy to electric currents.

Hi. The modern one generate power by spinning a generator. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_turbine . The older looking ones usually pump water.
