I know, but they don't have to be a doctor or a nurse, just someone who went to uni (don't want common scum like us in charge of a form!) It can be a teacher, church minister, neighbour, friends mum?
I'm filling out my passport form at the moment because I lost my last one, they want the date and place I lost it - don't they use their brain? If Iknew when and where I lost it it wouldn't be lost! Apparently though if I don't have a passport I'll need to get an ID card. The b*stards.

It's true that you have to have the photo countersigned by a professional person who has known you for a number of years. The DVLA have to take steps to make sure you're not just passing some random photo off as your own in an attempt to get a fake ID.

You don't have to do it if you can send your passport with the application. It's only to prove your identity - if you've no passport you have to get the photo countersigned to say it's you.

It's fair enough really if you want people to take driving licences seriously as proof of age & ID.

I thought that was just for your passport. My son got his provisional last year and he didnt have to do this. The laws must have changed.
